‘Fore! Ouch’ Golf & Pain

‘Fore! Ouch!’

Former LPGA tour player Robynn Ree working with i.Athlete Physio

Golf can be a tough sport - distances, accuracy, club selection, wind factor, breath in/breath out, early extension, lag, and so much more to already think about yet to perform. We haven’t factored in trying to play through pain! Pain during and after golf can hinder your performance and impact all facets of the game including the above mentioned and not mentioned variables.

WHY ARE WE MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT BY NOT ADDRESSING OUR PAIN! This is one of the largest pieces that impact our golf performance and yet we're so slow to address pain - we rather buy a new golf club, getting a swing coach, or hit more balls on the range.

Here is how pain can impact YOU - the Golfer

  1. Physical limitations: Pain can limit a golfer's range of motion, making it difficult to perform certain movements required in the golf swing. For example, back pain can restrict a golfer's ability to rotate their torso, which is essential for generating power in the swing.

  2. Compensation: To avoid pain, golfers may unconsciously compensate by altering their swing mechanics. For example, a golfer with knee pain may avoid shifting weight onto their lead leg, leading to a loss of power and accuracy.

  3. Mental distraction: Pain can be distracting, making it difficult to focus on the mechanics of the swing. Golfers may also experience anxiety about aggravating their pain, leading to tension and hesitation in their swing.

In general, any type of pain can impact a golfer's performance, especially if it's chronic or severe. It's important for golfers to address any pain they're experiencing and work with a medical professional or golf coach to adjust their swing mechanics and develop strategies for managing pain on the course.

A physio/physical therapist focused on your pain who has a clear understanding of the golf swing and the game of golf can help you address your pain and while at the same time improve your golf game. How great is that? Next time you go out there make don’t yell ‘FORE’ but make sure you address you pain.
